MotionX GPS Drive; The turn-by-turn GPS app that I once ignored

Despite seeing numerous blog posts written about the MotionX GPS Drive app I will admit that I mostly ignored it. I am not really sure why, aside from that I kind of thought that a GPS cannot possibly be decent with a $2.99 price tag, after all some of the major players like Navigon and TomTom are selling for around 100 bucks.

That said, after giving is a little closer look, I am thinking a purchase will be coming soon as I have a few road trips planned for the coming months.

First things first, I am not saying this is a perfect solution, but my main reason for a purchase has now come because of that $2.99 price and how it includes 30-days of Live Voice Guidance. Yes, just 30-days, but after that time is over you can either pay for another 30-days (via an in-App purchase) or just let it lapse until you need it again. In other words, you pay for the voice guidance when you need it, not on a regular monthly basis. You are also not paying a huge upfront cost.

Additionally, other features of the app include integration with the iPhone, iPod and Address Book as well as the compass on the iPhone 3GS. In terms of the Live Voice Guidance, users can expect up to date maps, real-time routing, voice guidance, MotionX 3D maps, POI’s (points of interest) cached routes and a simulation mode.

Another nice perk with the MotionX GPS Drive app is that the maps, which cover all of the US and Canada, are dynamic. That means they are not pre-loaded on the iPhone, which in turn means that your iPhone will not be filled with GB’s of map data, it also means that you always have up to date maps without having to worry about performing updates.
