I have now officially had my OWLE Bubo for a week, and figure it is safe to offer up a post with some of my thoughts about the device. I am however going to stray from a typical review type post and offer up a list of thoughts that came to mind during my week of use. I also want to point out that this is based on MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and your thoughts will likely differ. With that, as you would expect, some are good and some are bad, so I encourage you to read through the full list.
What I liked:
- Video quality is great thanks to the included lens
- The OWLE Bubo is very easy to customize with multiple accessories including lenses, mics, lights and mounts
- Overall it is as simple to use as you want it to be
- Using this could give you a more professional appearance, which is good if you are looking to cover an event (I think I will be using this when I go to CES in January)
What I disliked:
- The OWLE Bubo feels kind of heavy and a little bulky at times (when not in use)
- Lots of parts (accessories) to keep track of
- The handles could have been a half-inch to an inch longer to make it a little easier to grip
- The Bubo may have been a little nicer with a padded or protected lining built into where the iPhone mounts, as opposed to needing a case for a snug fit
- Following up on that last comment, this is mainly because the rubber case tended to shift while the iPhone was being put into the Bubo and occasionally ended up covering the lens on the iPhone
In summary, I will say that overall I have some mixed feelings about the OWLE Bubo, not about the build quality or what it does in terms of video quality, but instead about who would actually need this and whether or not I would use it on a regular basis.
I guess in the end my only reason concern or hint at dislike comes due to my personal use issues and not with the OWLE Bubo itself.
However, I can say without hesitation that the OWLE Bubo is well made and could be considered a must have accessory for any geek looking for a video solution for the iPhone that is easily customizable.
With that, I understand the $99.95 price tag may be a little more than some are willing to spend, or that some may have some reservations about making the purchase without really knowing what they are getting. Based on that I wish I had a sample unit that I could send out to everyone with a question, but alas I only have this one and that would also be expensive to ship all over — however what I can do is offer to answer any questions that you may have.
Finally, as I mentioned in a earlier post, the OWLE Bubo will go on sale beginning at 9 am on October 27 (next Tuesday) and is going to initially sell for $99.95.
Those that purchase an OWLE Bubo will receive the unit itself which is made from anodized billet aluminum as well as an aluminum .45x wide-angle/macro combo lens, a Vericorder microphone, rubber iPhone case and instruction booklet.

Does it have a tripod mount?
How about a hot shoe mount on top for a light?

It has FOUR threaded mounts on top and bottom of the hand grips. The shoe is a cold shoe. It comes with the lens and hi impedance mic however I saw the demo of the 30-pin connector that allows for XLR mics. Just received mine today – it’s built very solid, the body is indestructible.
As many have said, size-wise (not pricewise) the Bubo is bigger than many AVCHD cams, but the real key is the iPhone functionality. You could get some amazing instantaneous video workflow out of this device, and if Apple enabled 720p, that would be even better.

I got mine for Christmas, and as a videographer, this thing rocks! I often thought about having a Flip in my bag, but I would much rather have one device and a bunch of add-ons. One thing to mention is that its a good idea to turn on airplane mode in the phone (system settings) while recording – last thing you want is for a phone call to bust your shot, and it also prevents the weird cell phone audio buzz buzz. A friend at a camera shop has a ton of adapter rings and lens for the 37mm lens fitting, so I eventually will try out a telephoto and most definitely a fish eye (more than the .45x lens that comes with it). Great product – just watch for sharp edges around the cold shoe mount.

do you have problems with the sound? When I use the mic, it gets terrible sound, like a popping noise. Could it be a bad mic?
