The iPhone Gains Ground on RIM

The iPhone’s been the hot topic on most every survey conducted pertaining to availability of apps and multimedia functions and it’s quickly gaining ground in the smartphone arena where business use is concerned. According to the latest research, the iPhone’s “smart” market share now stands at 30 percent, versus 40 percent for the current reigning champion, RIM’s BlackBerry. Palm’s webOS platform rounds out the top three with 7 percent.

Notably missing from the results was Google’s Android operating system, which has earned the full support of Verizon of late. If advertising campaigns are any indication, there’s a chance Verizon may not be allowed to carry the iPhone once AT&T’s exclusivity comes to an end. According to Verizon’s chief executive, the decision is entirely up to Apple.

Verizon and Motorola’s forthcoming George Lucas- inspired Droid phone is poised to be a major challenger to Apple’s iPhone dominance, and according to industry insiders, represents the most high-profile smartphone to make use of Google’s Android OS thus far.
