I remember when those expensive noise machines came out a few years back. They were sold in high end home and electronic stores. They had a bunch of different “calming” sounds like waves, birds, and rain. And they were supposed to put you to sleep. Well they were definitely fun to look at and play with in the store, but no way was I going to spend a huge chunk of change on one. Then MP3 players and iPods started getting big and those little noise machines were lost to the times. Now you can download all types of different soothing sounds for your iPhone or iTouch. White Noise, by TMSOFT, is an entire app dedicated to soothing sounds to help you get some rest.

The app has forty different sounds, a lot more than most of the other sound apps. It has the sounds you would expect to find in an ambient sound app like: beach, birds, rain, water, thunder and more. But it also houses some sounds you might not think of at first. Sounds like: traffic, trains, busy conversation, and more odd sounds that cater to a different crowd! All of the sounds in this app are very clear and professionally recorded, so you’re getting high quality relaxation!

The app is pretty easy to use. For starters, you need to customize the apps home screen with the eight sounds you like most. To select which sound you want displayed on your home screen,  go to the sound catalog, then tap the edit button and move each sound to the top of the list.  Then you can tap each sound any time you want to let it carry you away to dream land.

This app also comes with a host of extra features. One, you can change the pitch of your sound. Two, you can set a timer to fade your sound out over the last minute. So maybe you’re using this app for a presentation and you want to blend sounds together. And three, you can set a timer for the app to close. So in case you fall asleep you can conserve power.

All in all this app was well done. The biggest turn on is its wide variety of unique and well done sounds. Do I believe it will make me fall asleep? Maybe! But for the price of just $.99 it’s definitely worth checking out and having fun with!
