A job listing for an iPhone Software Engineer has popped up on Apple’s site, and it’s interesting for quite a few reasons. For one, it’s very specific that this particular position will be aimed at the iPhone/iPod Touch Maps application, which is a bit unusual for an Apple job listing. Take this excerpt:
The iPhone has revolutionized the mobile industry and has changed people’s lives and we want to continue to do so. We want to take Maps to the next level, rethink how users use Maps and change the way people find things. We want to do this in a seamless, highly interactive and enjoyable way. We’ve only just started.
It’s all the more intriguing given that Google recently launched the Google Maps Navigation application for Android 2.0 (and a stripped down version for earlier Android users). This position could mean that Apple is gearing up to add similar features to their Maps app, or possibly even try for something completely different than Google.
I don’t think Apple will be able to avoid adding free GPS navigation to their Maps solution in 2010, so it’s a given that we’ll see that feature sometime soon. The real question is what else does Apple have up their sleeves.
