AT&T Fights Back Against Verizon… With a Luke Wilson Ad

AT&T is trying to fight back against Verizon’s brilliant new ad campaign which criticizes their 3G network by launching one of their own. The new TV ad features Luke Wilson (don’t ask me why) discussing some key benefits of AT&T’s 3G network–which includes its faster speed, the ability to talk and surf at the same time (this refers to a limitation in Verizon’s 3G network which prevents it from doing this), the availability of the most popular smartphones, and access to over 100,000 apps. The last two points clearly just refer to the iPhone.

It’s interesting that AT&T keeps this commercial simple and cute, instead of actually trying to directly address the issues Verizon’s ads point to. On the one hand, they probably don’t want to legitimize Verizon’s complaints too much–but on the other, this ad just seems to scream “We have the iPhone and YOU DON’T!”.

Weak. They need to slam Verizon. They need to show a map with both Edge and 3G coverage, they need to hammer home the point of not being able to use the internet and talk at the same time.

Also, what does 100k apps have to do with AT&T? Do they have their own app store now?

  2. Terry Says:

Yes they do, but there apps are 10 x more money

  3. Eddy Says:

That’s really weak. They need to be more agressive

I liked the suttleness of the commercial. Makes it seem like they don’t have to work so hard to make verizon seem weak in comparison.—
See if AT&Ts commercial is so weak but still manages to get the point across, then that just shows you how weak verizon is to be put down by such a weak commercial.

Aiden it doesn’t seem very subtle to me, maybe light and breezy is a better term for what they’re doing. And I don’t think Verizon’s position is at all reduced by this commercial.

  6. Holt Murray Says:

Great call Devrinda! That ad is neither subtle nor direct though — it’s obtuse! They are answering back to the Verizon Wireless less coverage ads with this? If this is what they presented to the judge re the injuction on the VW ad, I think theyed be found in Contempt.

Picture this: Both companies sell a rain coat:

    - AT&T’s has an incredible version of blue makes you look great.

    - Verizon Wireless has a brand new rain coat that has come out in three popular, but basic colors. However, the fabric is analagous to being open source – the public knows that more inter-changeable colors will be forthcoming.

    - Advantage goes to AT&T at this point because it has a bird in the hand instead of ‘promised’ colors

    - Oh wait, one more thing, Verizon Wireless’ rain coat keeps you fully covered when it rains, keeping you dry; AT&T’s coat keeps your shoulders dry, the rest of your torso is likely to be wet in any size rainstorm.

    - It is a smart PHONE and the 3G network does need coverage.
