I’m a big fan of having fun while learning, but if we’re all completely honest with ourselves, there isn’t very many fun, educational games. In the majority of games for the iPhone or iTouch, you can either have fun or you can learn, you can’t have both! Well what if there was a fun and educational game that some one could play for hours at a time? Well now there is! Brain Thaw, an app by Groovy Squared, is an entertaining mathematics game.
The goal of Brain Thaw is simple, you’re given a math function (like multiples of 5 or factors of 24) and you’re asked to guide a brainy penguin by the name of Newton around the board so he can munch down those numbers. But if only it was that easy. Unfortunately for Newton, this math world is filled with Yeti’s who want to snack on him. So you have to be careful to avoid the Yeti’s while moving Newton around the board.
You’re scored on how quickly you clear all of the corresponding numbers off the board. Your score is displayed along the top of the screen, along with bonus points and lives remaining. To grab bonus points, munch down on the bonus tiles marked by a x2 or x3. Every time Newton is eaten by a Yeti you’ll lose a life, so make sure to keep a close eye on how many you’ve got left!
The interface for this game is pretty well done. It’s obvious that developers took time with the look and play of the game. I couldn’t find any flaws or problems while playing the game. All in all, this is a great time killer for it’s $.99 price tag. And who knows, you might train your brain in the process. So check out Brain Thaw now!
