iPhone 3GS Wins Out in Browser Speed Battle vs. Droid and Eris
November 7, 2009 | Devindra Hardawar

No, I’m not gloating, but it’s worth pointing out that despite the Droid’s hardware superiority over the iPhone 3GS in certain respects, the trusty iPhone still loads web pages faster according to this Android Central shootout. And after all, when we’re throwing down with our smartphone brethren, isn’t that what really matters? Well, not really, but it’s a nice stat to have while the Droid users laugh at our 3MP cameras and lack of flash.
At least the Droid loads pages faster than the cheaper $100 Eris, so in that respect you get what you pay for. The video also makes the very good point that you can’t really go wrong with any of these phones, and for many users the cheaper (yet curvier and sexier) Eris, may actually be their ideal Android phone.
Over these next few days we’re going to see many more comparisons between the iPhone 3GS and these new Android entrants, and it’s going to be interesting to see how well the 3GS continues to stack up.

Devindra, is it possible for the iPhone to run serval apps at a time with just a software upgrade? Or is a lack of hardware that currently does not allow this? Perhaps a separate post about this?
TIA
It’s purely software that’s preventing true multitasking on the iPhone. There’s a jailbreak app that allows you to run *any* iPhone app in the background, and it works wonders. Basically, Apple is afraid that people will run too many programs and eat up the iPhones memory, as well as drain the battery very quickly. Until they’re comfortable with the iPhones performance in those instances, Apple probably won’t allow multitasking.
Thanks for the quick reply! How is running two or three apps any different than running 3G, location services and GPS? I think this is why the Droid phone is so great, it will force Apple into making some changes to benefit all of us. I really don’t want to unlock or jailbreak my phone just so I can listen to internet radio and play cards at the same time.
This is one of the feature I like about Apple iPhone, which I can experience a very smooth Internet surfing with the Safari browser.
Cheers~~~
Mister X, I guess it’s because Apple feels that some customers wouldn’t quite understand that they still have apps running. The current interface for the iPhone isn’t equipped to tell you when an app is running in the background, after all. And I agree about the Droid, competition is exactly what Apple needs to be forced to open up.
