iTranslate Plus App Review: Does it Talk the Talk?

iTranslate Plus App Review: Does it Talk the Talk?

The world is vastly populated with around 7 billion people, a number that is constantly growing. Chances are you’ll encounter some one in your life that speaks a different language. If you want to be prepared, you can either learn every single language known to man kind, or you can download iTranslate Plus for your iPhone.

The app, made by Outer Space Apps, holds thirty five different language that can be translated from one another. It’s pretty simple to use, all you do is type your text into one box, select the language you want, and it will be shown in the box below. First, you’ll need to choose the language you want to translate from. To do this, use the list provided in the top right corner. Then type in the text you want translated. Lastly, select the language you want the text translated into by using the list  in the middle of the screen.

The app will then translate your text into that language, it’s that simple! The app is powered by Google, so one would think it would be extremely accurate. However, because the text is computer translated the app doesn’t account for things like grammar. For example, most languages have a unique way of organizing their sentence structure. Well, this app simply translates words into words. It doesn’t do a very good job rearranging an entire phrase correctly. However, it does give you enough to carry on a conversation in most 0f the languages it offers.

The app has a few bonus features to offer as well. One, the app allows you to switch the two texts. So, if you previously translated English to Spanish, you can tap the switch button to translate from Spanish to English. The app also shows small pictures of the country’s flag that speaks the languages. And lastly, you can change the font size of text by doing so in the options menu and then restarting the app.

All in all this is a pretty well done app. It certainly won’t replace a human translator. However, it does beat carrying around a big thick book. The only major flaw with this app is speech. Sure, the app can show the translated text on the screen, but that doesn’t mean I can pronounce it! A speech feature would be greatly appreciated in the future. But for now, the app is definitely worth the $1.99 price tag.

Verdict: 4/5 Stars
