The following news may be depressing to those dreaming of working at at Apple’s new Upper West Side store in New York. You have been warned. At a press event today, Apple mentioned that 10,000 people submitted applications to work at the store, and a little over 200 actually ended up getting jobs. That’s an acceptance rate of about 2%. Silicon Alley Insider makes the fascinating point that this is actually significantly lower than Harvard’s most recently reported acceptance rate–7%, or 2,000 acceptances out of 29,000 applications.
Of course the application process for both are vastly different, but it remains an interesting figure. I would attribute part of that number to New York’s double-digit unemployment rate, but it also speaks to how much people want be part of the Apple machine. I can’t think of any other technology company that spurs on this sort of excitement from people, which is both a blessing and a curse for Apple.
Personally, I’m just worried that this news will make the employees at that location even more smug than the typical Apple Store employee.
