Looking for Adventure? Five RPG Games for the iPhone

If you have a few hours to spare, and are happy to spare many more after that, then you may want to investigate RPG and MMORPG games on the iPhone.  For some time, this genre was represented badly in the iTunes App Store, but as you’ll see, things have changed!  Take a look through our list to see if any grab your interest:

Outer Empires.

Our first game is online only and differs from the rest by being set in space rather than a fantasy land.  It’ll remind seasoned gamers of Elite, which is recommendation enough, with plenty of trading, colonization and missions to fly.  Downsides?  You have to pay a monthly subscription.

Zenonia.

One of the first and arguably one of the best classic style RPGs for the iPhone.  From the cute graphics and the fun soundtrack, playing Zenonia will awaken memories of early Zelda or other similar action RPGs.  Be prepared to invest some time in leveling up your character though, as some of the quests are quite tough.

Hybrid: Eternal Whisper.

From the makers of Zenonia, Hybrid: Eternal Whisper is a far more combat orientated game with enough RPG elements built-in to keep the more hardcore players happy.  The control system is also similar to Zenonia, so if that was a problem for you there, it will be here too.  Despite this, the side-scrolling fighting sequences sit nicely next to the more traditional questing.

The Quest.

A much more classic style of RPG, The Quest returns 50 hours of gameplay, a large free-roaming world to explore and many puzzles to solve.  You view the world in a first-person view but don’t expect any stunning graphical achievements here, as it recalls late 8-bit genre games.  Just by watching the video, you’ll know of this is the type of RPG you love or hate.

CozyQuest.

Another RPG set in a fantasy land, so if dragons and the like aren’t for you, then chances are you won’t like CozyQuest.  It’s primarily text based too, however out of all the examples here it feels the closest to being a true MMORPG, with plenty of players and a sense of community.  The next update of the game is due at the end of the year.

Let us know if you play any of these games and whether you enjoy the RPG experience on the iPhone.  Also, look out for Eyecandid’s Bedlam which is coming soon, as it’s looking very impressive indeed.
