Magellan Releases GPS iPhone App, For Some Reason

Joining the likes of GPS giants TomTom and Telenav, Magellan is now throwing their hat into the ring by releasing a GPS iPhone App, Magellan Roadmate 2010. Retailing for $79.99, the app follows in the footsteps of its high-priced brethren. Of course, all of these applications seem set for extinction if Google’s free Maps Navigation ever makes it way over to the iPhone (and it most likely will), so I’d have to question Magellan’s wisdom in releasing this app. They’ve most likely been working on it for months and have no choice but to release it, even if it will soon be made obsolete.

RoadMate offers features like Highway Lane Assist (to let you know when to switch lanes), Pedestrian mode, a parking bookmark feature, and more. Ultimately though, none of the features justify that high price if Google Maps Nav comes to the iPhone–especially since Google’s product offers some nifty functionality (inspired used of Street View, for one) that no other GPS app has. These expensive GPS apps will have to drop in price significantly, as well as pile on exclusive features, if they want to compete with Google at all in the near future.

In December, Magellan will release an iPhone mounting dock for $129 which offers enhanced GPS functionality, an amplified speaker, and of course phone-charging.
