More details on TomTom’s upcoming car kit for the iPod touch
November 21, 2009 | Robert Nelson

The other day I mentioned that TomTom was planning to release a car kit designed specifically for the iPod touch, and it looks like it is now listed on the official TomTom website. Unfortunately it is not yet available for purchase, nor does it give a date as to when it will be available. In fact it is just listed as “currently not available through TomTom.com.”
But that aside, it does at least offer a glimpse as to what we can expect — feature and price wise.
To begin with the car kit it currently showing a price of $99.95, which is a little less expensive as compared to the $119.95 for the iPhone car kit.
Feature wise the TomTom car kit for the iPod touch will offer users secure docking, clear voice instructions, a line out for music playback and the ability to rotate between portrait to landscape. Additionally, and perhaps the nicest two is the built-in GPS receiver and the fact that the car kit will keep your iPod touch charged.

The features make it sound precisely like the iPhone version, the only obvious difference being that the iPhone version has a microphone and allows hands-free calling – This wouldn’t be much use on the Touch, I guess.
For what it’s worth, the iPhone version is shipping in the UK and I’ve been using mine for a couple of weeks now. Build quality is excellent and the GPS performance seems to be enhanced over the built-in one.
Voice calling is clear and the volume is good – the speaker quality is excellent actually and much better than the built in microphone.
The mount isn’t quite as easy to use as my RAM mount, but once in the device is held well and it charges quickly.
Is it worth the retail price… I’m not sure, you’re definitely paying a premium over the other items on the market, but it’s got enough of the JustWorks about it that the premium is worthwhile, if JustWorks is your thing!
