Fans of public radio content from the likes of NPR and PRI aren’t starving for iPhone applications, but the generically named Public Radio App ($2.99) brings something new to the table in the form of DVR-esque timeshifting capabilities. The app allows you to pause and rewind a variety of public radio streams across the country. It also offers a nifty programming guide to see what shows are coming up, and has the capability to use your GPS to find local public radio stations, which makes it perfect for road trips.
Personally, I’m a big fan of of the NPR News App, and there are a variety of other free options out there as well. If you’re looking to just listen to NPR content on your iPhone and iPod touch the free applications will suit you fine. But if you’re a bit more hardcore, and don’t want to live out one of NPR’s fabled “driveway moments”, then Public Radio App could be your savior. I’ve often wished that similar timeshifting capabilities existed in car radios just for NPR–this is the next best thing for me.
