In what seemed like it would never happen, the iPhone has officially launched in China with China Unicom as the carrier. Yup, the iPhone, or more specifically the 8GB iPhone 3G as well as the 16 and 32GB iPhone 3GS are available for purchase.
Of course as you most likely remember there is a few things that are not the same as most other iPhones. Most notably, the Wi-Fi is missing.
According to Apple the deal with China Unicom is non-exclusive. And already another local carrier is in talks to begin offering the iPhone. Maybe having multiple carriers will help pricing which at this point is high.
Current customers are paying the equivalent of $1,026 US dollars for the 32GB model. That said, while the price is high, at least that is for a contract-free model.
Despite the high prices, personally I would say that it is just nice to see that this is real and customers can actually purchase a phone.
