There’s An App for Everything, Including Wheelchairs

Dynamic Controls, a company that makes control units for power wheelchairs and scooters, has announced that they have integrated iPhone/iPod Touch control into their electronics. The integration allows wheelchair users to get real-time diagnostics about their chairs, including speed and compass assistance.

Says CEO Charlotte Walsh:

We recognised the iPhone has revolutionised the way people communicate and saw the opportunity to develop this solution for wheelchair users, taking full advantage of Apple’s ‘Works with iPod / Made for iPhone’ developer program.

It doesn’t look like users can actually control their chairs using their iPhones, but the diagnostics alone are pretty cool. I’m always fascinated by the creative ways people can use the iPhone as a portable computing device, and it looks like this app will help many disabled folks.

Other features of the integration include computer mouse control, control over IR/wifi appliances, and control over devices attached to the chair.
