While I don’t think the below Dilbert strip is pointing to Microsoft directly, it is making fun of their current culture which has led to things like Windows Mobile 7 not being released until the end of 2010. Meanwhile, all the hey have to show for WinMo is 6.5, which is in no way a decent competitor to current offerings from Apple, Google, Palm, and Blackberry.
Even worse for MS, 2010 is going to be an even crazier year for smartphones. We’re getting the fourth gen iPhone, new Palm devices, and the Google phone — along with an onslaught of Android devices. While I’m sure MS may have a lot of work that still needs to get done for WinMo 7, that’s really no excuse. For Windows Mobile to survive, it should have been ready to go by the beginning of 2010 at the earliest.
If I were Microsoft, I’d be worried about being completely irrelevant in the mobile space come the end of 2010. Unless WinMo 7 grants wishes, most consumers will have long forgotten about it.
