iKoto App Review: Japanese Harp Heavan

There are very few sounds that we find in our daily lives that have the ability to calm us down and help us relax. Chances are the vast majority of us are forced to put up with annoying, angering and obnoxious sounds as we go about our everyday business. So it’s only natural that we seek serenity in sounds that we normally wouldn’t hear. Some of us might try expensive sound systems, others might try cheap CD’s. Well I suggest checking out the iKoto app for your iPhone or iTouch. Not only can you listen to soothing sounds, you can create them!

The iKoto is an app that allows users to create their very own memorable music via virtual Japanese harp. If you can’t imagine what a Japanese harp sounds like, think back to any movie you’ve seen in witch they show a part of ancient Japanese culture. Then think of the music that was playing and you got it.

The app lets users play a 13 stringed harp that’s perfectly tuned and needs absolutely no experience! All you need to do is tap the app to start it and maybe a few finger stretches. Then watch as the iKoto sets the scene by displaying a pair of grand doors opening wide, while a shower of cherry blossoms fall from the air. Then your taken to a top view of the instrument yourself, ready to play away!

The app comes with a pre-installed classic Japanese tune that you can attempt to conquer. But I had much more fun trying to make my own music. You have the option of recording and saving a creation in case you create the next great Japanese harp hit! You can then playback your creation for friends and family to enjoy!

All in all, the app is pretty well done but lacks interest. Sure you can strum along for a couple minutes or so, but unless you know what you’re doing you won’t get very far. At $.99 it’s appropriately priced for an average music app. So give iKoto a try!

Verdict: 3/5 Stars

check out iPlay Harp.. Harp and Koto in one app with 3 different harp layout. But the best part is that you can upload your recordings and download other users' recordings and learn to play them.
