New Droid Ad Calls iPhone “A Precious Porcelain Figurine of A Phone”
December 4, 2009 | Devindra Hardawar

The latest Droid ad makes it clear that it’s a phone for manly Maxim-reading, Spike TV-watching, men. Why? Because “It’s a robot.” At the same time, it takes countless pot shots on the iPhone calling it a “a precious porcelain figurine of a phone”, and a “tiara-wearing digitally clueless beauty pageant queen.”
Of course, they never explicitly say iPhone (although there is a cartoon render of a white phone that looks similar), but like all of their other ads, it’s obvious who’s the subject of their scorn.
The ad declares that the Droid is a “”racehorse duct-taped to a Scud missile fast”, and also implies that it’s more than just pretty. I do think the ad is effective for a certain demographic, but it also sort of implies that the Droid isn’t a very good looking phone, and that women don’t seem to be invited to the Droid club. The 18-24 male demographic is a particularly desirable one for Verizon and Motorola, but I’m not sure if this ad campaign is the best way to go around courting users.

A co-worker brought a Droid to work the 1st day it was out. My 1st thought was it was the ugliest phone I'd ever seen. VERY 1970's
ugly woman < beautiful woman
ugly car < beautiful car
ugly house < beautiful house.
WTF kind of stupid campaign are they running?
My 13 year old daughter just got the droid and I'm sad to say that it's pretty much the best phone I've ever used. I'm constantly stealing it and she doesn't give my phone a second glance any more
flash, porn, verizon network, bigger screen , background apps- it's hard to knock droid anymore.
