Stream live and recorded EyeTV content over 3G using the new Live 3G Web App

The EyeTV app originally launched with an easter egg feature that allowed you to stream over a 3G connection, but sadly that was pretty quickly updated and removed. And now in a little bit of good news, no unfortunately that easter egg has not returned but Elgato has added another feature that will allow EyeTV users to stream live and recorded content over a 3G connection using their iPhone.

They have introduced the Live3G web site which is a web app that, simply put will “stream live television over a 3G connection to an iPhone.”

The concept is simple, the app is actually running in the browser, which takes away the need for App Store approval. You are actually streaming the content by using Mobile Safari and this can be used on a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

Of course, there are some limitations, first you need to be an EyeTV user. But that aside you will not be able to take advantage of things like the program guide, program details or editing current recording schedules. Basically, you are limited to watching live or recorded television. But on a positive note, you can also plug your iPhone into a television using the TV out capability.

All things considered, this is a pretty nice work around to the 3G streaming limitations that come with the App Store. Of course, that is easy for me to say and I will point out that I am not currently an EyeTV user so I have not been able to test this, therefor I cannot comment how well the stream actually works.
