The Sound of Music – Seven iPhone Music Videos

We chatted about the University of Michigan’s interesting computer science course last week, where students would compose and perform an orchestral piece using only iPhones, and are now waiting to see the final piece make its online debut following the live performance on the 9th December.

To get us in the mood, here is a selection of videos showing off the musical ability of the iPhone and its ‘players’:

1.  Smoky Bubbles.

If you’re not sure if jailbreaking is worthwhile, this great song was only able to be produced by doing so!

2.  Kids.

Probably the best known demonstration of the iPhone’s – and iPod Touch’s – musical prowess.

3.  Matrix Music Pad

It may look simple, but to play something this catchy takes some practice!

4.  Hotel California.

The perennial guitar favorite played using Frontier Design Group’s Guitar app.

5.  Zelda.

Ocarina is a fabulous app and one of its creators a guiding light behind the University of Michigan’s course, but it’s a struggle to find a decent example of what it can do!  We’ll have to leave it to Ocarina co-creator Ge Wang to show us how it’s done, then.

6.  Melodica.

Tone Matrix’s aren’t just for replicating the Close Encounters tune, they’re great for whiling away hours creating actual music too!

7.  Bloom.

Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers ambient music generator put through its paces by German musican Bjoern Eichstaedt.

Hope you enjoyed these and if you’re a keen iPhone musician, share links to your videos in the comments section, as we would love to see them!
