Sure, iPhone users can technically still use Google Voice apps such as GV Mobile, but those being able to use them are limited to those who are willing to jailbreak and as much as I would like to think otherwise, that number is not really that large.
But in terms of Google Voice and the iPhone, there are those that are still hoping to see Google Voice apps come back to the iPhone and into the App Store, but at the same time there are others who seem to be taking a more realistic approach by developing in the form of a web app.
Just recently we have been given our first look at one of those web apps, which is being called VoiceCentral, the Black Swan Edition. Of course, for those that remember back, VoiceCentral was one of those App Store apps that were caught in the original Google Voice mess that happened a while back.
But putting that behind us, the new app is completely done in the web browser and appears to have the same look as what you would expect with a native app. According to the VoiceCentral website, the app will feature;
- Native iPhone® look and feel.
- Sync your Google Voice™ data.
- Automatic and immediate updates.
- Offline access to Google Voice™ data.
- Listen to Google Voice™ messages and read transcriptions.
- Swipe to delete calls, voicemails, or SMS conversations.
- Google Contacts import.
- Call using Google Voice™ or iPhone®.
Unfortunately as of now there are still a few questions that remain, such as how much the app will cost, and when it will be released.
Otherwise it appears to have some real potential. Those interested can sign up on the website to become a beta tester, although it was noted as being a “very limited beta.” Personally, I signed up the other day, but still have not yet heard back.
