Apple responsible for 99.4% of mobile app sales with the App Store

As an iPhone user and fan it is hard to deny the success and appeal of the App Store. After all, it has an app for just about anything you could imagine and on top of that it is pretty easy to use. Well, maybe not as easy for discovery, but easy in terms of downloading an app and installing it on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Given that, it should not come as much of a surprise that Apple is dominating the mobile app market. I think its safe to say that just about everyone could believe that — with or without evidence.

But just in case anyone had any doubt, there is some evidence, which comes courtesy of Gartner.

Just what does it show? Well it shows that Apple was responsible for 99.4% of ALL mobile app sales in 2009. That means that all of the other platforms are taking up a combined 0.6%.

Of course, that number is expected to decline a little bit in 2010, but with the recent surge of other mobile platforms such as Android that is only to be expected. But the good news in that is according to that same report, it is expected that Apple will retain around 67% of that market.

And while 67% is a big drop as compared to 99.4% it is still a pretty dominate lead.
