Google releases updated HTML5 based Google Voice web app for the iPhone

I woke up yesterday morning feeling pretty stoked that I finally received a beta invite to check out VoiceCentral, the BlackSwan edition. And within hours that excitement seemed to dwindle a bit. That is not to say anything bad about BlackSwan, because at first glance it seems great, but in reality I did not have much time to play and then Google jumped in the game with their latest Google Voice web app.

Anyway, the official Google Voice web app will work on any iPhone running OS 3.0 or later and uses HTML5, which is a “new web technology that makes it possible to run faster, richer web-based applications right in the browser.”

But in reality, what that means is you can really take full advantage of a web app. Users of the Google Voice web app will find they can make outbound calls (and have those calls display your Google Voice number) send and receive SMS messages as well as make low cost international calls. Of course, you can also read and listen to your voicemail messages.

To check out the new Google Voice web app, just point your browser to m.google.com/voice. You can also add the link to your home screen which comes complete with a fancy icon.
