Jezper Söderlund, a curious Apple customer from Sweden recently sent off an email to Apple CEO Steve Jobs inquiring about the tethering possibilities between the iPhone and the iPad. To most people interested in buying a WiFi-only iPad, tethering via an iPhone would have been a great selling point, but it also would have discouraged many people from buying the 3G iteration of the iPad. From a business standpoint I can definitely see where Apple is coming from in its decision to prevent tethering on the WiFi-only iPad (Jailbroken iPad, anyone?)
Here’s the original email conversation:
I’ll keep it short.
I’m Jezper from Sweden, a long time Apple fan, currently about to replace the very last computer at home with a brand spanking new iMac i7. I’m also awaiting the release of the iPad. However, I have one question:
Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?
Two devices, based on the same OS, with already built-in technology to share one data plan suggests a secondary contract could possibly be redundant.
From the look of your keynote, where the iPad sits well between my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, I was hoping the three of them could interact as seamless as possible.
All the best,
Jezper Söderlund [a famous DJ in his own right]
Jobs’ answer?
No.
Sent from my iPhone
Well, there you have it folks, I guess there won’t be Apple-supported tethering on the WiFi-only iPad. Now, that’s not to say that you won’t be able to tether your iPad to your iPhone once someone hacks the device, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Some days I think Jobs is a genius, other days a total douchebag. I already pay AT&T for an "unlimited" data plan, you can be damn sure I'm not paying another fee to use the iPad on 3G. I sure hope the jailbreakers get to work on the pad ASAP.

I may still get a WiFi only iPad for my wife as it meets all of her computing needs, but with this restriction I'm not interested.

As long as your IPhone is Jailbroke, no reason why you couldnt use one of the Apps that turns your Iphone into a wireless router, the PAD wouldnt know the diff.

This is crap but as mike sad, if you have a jailbroken iPhone you can use MyWi and your iPhone would look like a wifi-router.
