Gizmodo recently posted a comprehensive, not to mention exciting, list of all the “secret” features they were able to find in Apple’s new iPhone operating system, OS 4. Since I don’t have OS 4 yet, I’m relying solely on Gizmodo’s list in making this post.
Without further ado, the hidden features.
“Hidden” Features
- Ability to turn cellular data on/off
- SMS character count (160 characters max)
- Ability to search SMS messages
- Web and Wikipedia search now part of “Spotlight”
- Borderless document view
- Revamped “New Contact” screen
- Events, Faces and Places in the Photo menu
- Lyrics & Podcast info toggle
- Spellcheck (finally)
- Resize photos when sending
- Create new playlists (no more of that “On-the-Go” nonsense)
- Art in Album view (cool new iPod view)
- App-specific location services
- Alpha-numeric pass codes to unlock iPhone (passwords!)
- Alerts for App folders (a little exclamation point is displayed on the folder when one of the apps inside gets an alert)
- Contact pictures in emails
- Ability to close apps while multitasking (Jobs made this a bit unclear during his Q&A session, just hold down on an icon in multitask mode to quit it)
- A new calculator icon
- Birthday calendar (compiles birthday info from contacts list)
- Smart links for dates and addresses in emails
- Double tap and hold (instead of double tap) can be bound to certain functions (open iPod, phone, etc.)
- Failed SMS notification
- Note syncing
- In-page video playback in Mobile Safari
Not So Hidden Features
- Multitasking
- Home screen backgrounds
- Camera zoom
- Game center
- Email threading
- Unified inbox
- Folders in the dock
- Bluetooth keyboard pairing
So there you have it, some pretty cool “hidden” features that will be included in iPhone OS 4, courtesy of Gizmodo. I’m sure a few more interesting features will emerge from the woodworks before OS 4 is released to the public-at-large this summer.

Sounds good. But I wonder how many of these will actually work on the iPhone 3G. We'll probably just get the home screen background…
