While catching up with the Monaco F1 Grand Prix this weekend, I couldn’t help but notice that BBC Sport presenter Jake Humphrey had replaced that staple of all TV hosts, the clipboard and pen, with a far more modern option – an Apple iPad.
During the post-race discussions, Jake put his iPad to good use and read some comments posted on Twitter from it; but was this appearance a one-off, or the start of a long-term relationship? If Jake’s own Twitter comments are anything to go by, we think we’ll be seeing more of the iPad:
I think the clipboard has has it’s day. I use the new device to hold my script, access the F1 app, twitter and emails – ace!!
Embraced by the media already? It took a while for the iPhone to find its way onto the TV, so this early adoption should bode well for the future of the iPad as a presenter’s tool. We wonder who will be next?
Take a look below at the iPad in action, plus an example of just how much muck the screen gets covered in!

The iPad is great for scripts. I was technical director of a church’s theater production a few weeks ago where I had to follow a lengthy script every show to know when to fire off various visuals that were augmenting the show, such as videos and image projections in various screens. I used my iPhone 3Gsto quickly photograph every page of the printed script, used JotNot to clean up the page images so they would be crisp, and used Bump on both my iPad and iPhone to transfer the images to my iPad. I then had no need for the paper script and was able to much more easily flip around the script.
