You’re Twisting my iPhone Man!

Or, more precisely, you’re twisting a knob on my iPhone!  This is a brilliant hack seen over at dsLabs, where what looks like an old volume control knob has been filled with science and now allows precise twisting and turning of your iPhone’s screen!

According to the blog, the knob works in a similar way to an iPhone stylus, in that it fools the iPhone’s capacative screen into thinking it’s being touched by a finger.  It does this thanks to some copper wire, conductive fabric and some wires, spaced perfectly to simulate two individual touch points.  Give the knob a twist and as the video shows, the screen rotates.

Although the video shows Google Earth in action, we can’t help but think this little device’s natural home will be on one of those fiddly virtual steering wheels or yokes found in many vehicle-based iPhone games.  If your iPhone is stabilized on a table top by way of a case, then this would be a great alternative to normal two-handed play.

Enjoy the video of dsLabs hack in action!

This looks like a bit of a con to me, the guy is just using his two fingers on the outer edge of the knob to turn the screen image!

I don't think that's a con. In the last rotation the index finger is definitely off of the screen. Couldn't really tell for the first part of the clip, but look again at the 2nd half of the clip and you see the finger is up higher on the knob.

That's a neat little device, but I wouldn't have much use for it.
