For those who may be still holding onto a MobileMe subscription (as I sheepishly raise my hand), this latest bit of info may come as some good news. Apple has released a new app, which is called Find My iPhone. And as the name implies, it will allow the user to locate their iPhone (or iPad) on a map should it ever be lost or stolen.

And yes, this is similar to the functionality that you already had in the past with the web version found in your MobileMe dashboard. The difference here is that this app is to be installed on a mobile device, which could make tracking on-the-go easier. The catch is that you should not install the Find My iPhone app on your device, but install it on another iPhone or iPad that you still have in your possession.

In terms of features, the Find My iPhone app will allow the user to find their iPhone or iPad as well as display a message on the screen of the lost/stolen device, play an audible alert (at full volume for two minutes) and even remotely set a passcode lock. Plus if all hope seems to be lost, you can also remotely wipe the data.

Personally, I like the idea of the audible alert, especially in the case of a thief. Nothing like either scaring or annoying them in an effort to give your device back. Of course, that may cause them to simply smash it.

With that, the Find My iPhone app is available as a free download in the App Store. Though it should be mentioned, in order to use this you will need an active MobileMe account as well as an Apple device running iOS 3.1.3 or later.
