I have been more than happy with my iPad since I made the purchase when the 3G was released. In fact the only real complaint I have is how Steve Jobs touted that the iPhone apps would run on the iPad. Well, truth be told they do run on the iPad, but in many cases they look horrible. No real worry as plenty of developers have since released HD or iPad specific versions or even universal apps. But it would still be nice to have more options.
Well, it seems that my wish may be coming true in the form of apps designed for iPhone 4. The news is coming by way of the Make Coffee developer who provided a nice graphic depicting how the iPhone 4 apps will better fill the display on the iPad. Also based on his explanation, the “apps designed for iPhone 4 will nearly fill an iPad display.” Plus, on the flip side, the iPad designed apps will “nearly fit into the new phone’s Retina display without modification.”
Seems to me that this should make it easier for developers to offer iPhone and iPad versions of their app. Plus it sounds like good news for iPad users.
Of course, the display on the iPad is 1024 x 768 and that is slightly larger than the 960 x 640 resolution on the iPhone 4, so the apps may not look perfect but they should look better than the current selection of iPhone apps.

I personally hate the small iPhone apps on the iPad, and in my view that means it doesn’t run. Much better if it was scaled up.

This is GREAT news for developers. Cross-compatibility without much need for modiication? Beautiful.

Sorry, but I don't see what the big deal is here. Sure, the higher resolution iPhone 4 apps will display less pixelated on the iPads display, but they are still designed for a much smaller physical screen size. This becomes even more apparent if you think about running iPad apps on the iPhone 4. If you scale down buttons and interface elements to the physical screen size of the iPhone 4 these apps will become totally useless.
Resolution is one thing, but in interface design… physical size of the elements is way more important. Developers will still need to do a total makeover of their app interfaces when going from one platform to the other.
