This Week’s App Store Updates – 23rd July 2010

Browsing the App Store this weekend?  Here are fourteen new or updated apps worth taking a closer look at if you are:

Ecco the Dolphin.

The classic Sega Mega Drive game comes to the iPhone, with both US and Japanese editions of the dolphin-sim included.  The graphics looks suitably original, but the control system seems to need some work.  $2.99/£1.79.

Space Harrier II.

Welcome to the Fantasy Zone, get ready!  Another Sega arcade game out this week, this appears to be the Genesis conversion many expected to be a part of the Sega Genesis emulator app.  It certainly looks authentic and has all 13 stages along with two bonus rounds too.  $0.99/£0.59.

Instructables.com.

The iPhone app of the popular how-to website, with a neat collaboration twist.  Free.

Brazilian Bikini Workout.

Authentic Brazilian music, an exotic setting and promises of uncovering the secrets of the Brazilian approach to life and fitness, cannot cover up the fact this has ladies in bikini’s leaping about on video.  We thought this sort of behavior was banned from the App Store?  $2.99/£1.79.

ABC News for iPad.

An interactive news globe that you can spin and shake to view news stories from around the world.  Free.

Tron.

More hype-building from Disney for Tron Legacy out later this year.  Still, this is an app based on the famous tanks seen in the original film and is available for free, so we shouldn’t complain.  Except we will as it’s only available in the US!  Free.

SCVNGR.

The social networking app has been updated again, this time adding a ‘check-in’ option where bumping phones together provides points too.  New locations have been added to the database and you can also post challenges directly to Twitter.  Free.

HiWord Universal.

A Scrabble-style word game where you must make complete words from a collection of letters.  With a minimum of four letters at the start which increases as you progress, this could be more of a challenge than you think.  $0.99/£0.59.

MakeMyMusic.

A clever playlist generator that allows you to set genre and the time of day to ensure that you’re listening to the right style of music at the right moment.  $0.99/£0.59.

Annamika.

A collection of kaleadascopic artwork with interactive elements for your iPad.  The ten images are inspired by cities around the world and can be controlled by tapping, swiping or pinching.  Add your own pictures or if you’ve got a VGA adapter, you can display them on a monitor.  $4.99/£2.99.

Summer Solitaire.

It’s solitaire with a difference, as there are one hundred levels to move through, all of which are set in a meadow which grows and flowers as you play.  Available for both the iPhone and the iPad.  $2.99/£1.79.

StereograPic.

Use your iPad to view 3D stereogram pictures with this attractive looking applications.  There are 70 images included and some hints on how to see them.  $1.99/£1.19.

MOG Mobile Music.

If you’re already a MOG subscriber then this app is an essential download, if not then you’ll need to pay $9.99 per month for unlimited music downloads or streaming from a library of 8 million songs.  US-Only, Free.

N.O.V.A.- Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance.
