AutoCAD Coming to iPhone and iPad

Not only has Autodesk announced their return to the Apple Mac, but they’ve also announced an application for the iPhone and iPad too.  Autodesk have not provided their famous 3D engineering and design software, AutoCAD, for the Mac since 1992, but they’ve been forced to re-evaluate their position thanks to the recent resurgence of the brand.

In addition to the desktop software, Autodesk will release an application for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, called AutoCAD WS, which will provide access to AutoCAD files in order to review, edit and share them with other users.  Apple’s dedication to the touchscreen is certain to have played a part in Autodesk’s return, and we imagine this will look and feel superb on the iPad’s 9.7″ screen.  They also talk of the desktop edition supporting the Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse.

There is no exact release date for the software just yet, with only a tentative autumn schedule at present.  If you’re planning to grab the desktop edition, you’ll have to dig deep, as it’s priced at $3995 or $4445 if you want Autodesk’s support too.  The good news is the accompanying AutoCAD WS app will be free.
