Classic Amiga Shoot-em-up Battle Squadron Coming to iPhone!

Sometime back, we posted ten Amiga games that we’d love to see on the iPhone, and although these lists are often nothing more than idle dreams, one of them is about to come true.  Cope-Com, the publishers of Battle Squadron, are currently hard at work converting the game for the iPhone!

In a recent blog post, the Cope-Com team talked about starting the conversion of the original Amiga game code over the C/C++ and OpenGL, so that new versions wouldn’t need to use an emulator, and that the new game would be coming to the iPhone, iPad and Android phones.

A recent conversation with the team has revealed that development is progressing a lot quicker than they initially planned, and that the game would be getting a slightly revised title when it does launch, that of Battle Squadron ONE, and iPhonefreak has been given an exclusive sneak peak at the new logo:

Excitingly, the main reason this title change has been implemented is to denote its place in a new series of games, plus the concentration on single-player rather than multiplayer action.  This said, multiplayer support will be added in a future update of Battle Squadron ONE.

Fans of the original will be pleased to know the gameplay will be exactly the same as before, but we can expect an upgrade to stereo sound and some improved sound FX.  There is no release date attached to the game at this stage, but we should be seeing a rolling demo video of the game in action soon.

This is really exciting news and we can’t wait to get our hands on a fresh version of the game we spent hours and hours playing some 20 years ago!
