The iPad version of People Magazine has launched today, although earlier in the week there were concerns that it would be delayed thanks to disputes with photographers. At least 12 photo agencies, who supply People with their paparazzi shots of celebrities, planned to withhold their pictures until an agreement was reached regarding a revised pay rate.
Although this was widely reported as the reason the app was delayed, the magazine itself denied that it was a problem and that August was simply a ’soft deadline’. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, negotiations between the agencies and the People would be taking place on Thursday in New York, so perhaps these ended positively.
People magazine is now available as a free download from the App Store, however each issue will cost $3.99/£2.39 as an in-app purchase, although if you already subscribe to the magazine, you’ll get this digital edition for free. The cost seems to be very similar to the print edition, although it’s not stated whether their more expensive ’special editions’ will also be available for this price too.
The differences between print and iPad content appear to be minimal, although readers are promised access to breaking news, videos including trailers and songs, plus double the amount of Star Tracks pictures and some exclusive galleries.
Publisher Time Inc. already has Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazines available as iPad apps.
