FarFinder is Back in the App Store, But Under a Different Name
October 6, 2010 | Andy Boxall

FarFinder first appeared in the App Store in 2008, and has remained there until May 2010, when it was removed from sale by Apple due to a problem with its name. FarFinder, for those who don’t know, is a free app that works with a desktop program that provides remote access to your computer. That program is called, unsurprisingly, FarFinder.
It’s a comprehensive little tool, allowing users to view saved documents or images, use Spotlight and email or even fire up your Mac’s iSight webcam! Although the emphasis here is on the Mac, it works just as well on Windows or Linux too.
The app’s reinstatement to the App Store has come at a cost though, as it has been renamed FarSomething – a move that developer Adrian Ross says is a tribute to the early confusion over FireFox’s name – damaging the established brand and causing a few problems for the imminent release of FarFinder 2.
What a shame that Apple decided to wait for a couple of years before deciding that the FarFinder name wasn’t acceptable. Call me slow, but it took me a few moments to work out why they would do so in the first place, and once I did I still couldn’t see any potential for damage.
If you’re a FarFinder user, you can stop using the web interface and return to the app, but don’t forget you’ll no longer find it under FarFinder, as that’s a naughty name. Expect FarSomething (iTunes link) to change once FarFinder 2 is released.
