Verizon’s iPhone Ad Missing One Important Thing…
January 21, 2011 | Andy Boxall

Verizon have posted their first iPhone 4 TV advert online, and it doesn’t bother to show the phone at all. After lots of people looking at clocks, there is a brief flash of the phone’s name on screen, and then it ends. Verizon have been responsible for some great commercials over the last year or so – the first Droid spot being a great example – so have they lost their touch?
The answer is no, as the advert is clever, knowing and intriguing. Why bother to show a phone which is coming up for eight months old? Most people who care know what an iPhone 4 looks like, and those very same people will know it’s on its way – and this ad reflects what their life has been like! Not putting the phone in was exactly the right decision, and has allowed the ad to concentrate on what’s important – that the wait is over.
On the flipside, the spot is intriguing enough to entice anyone who hasn’t heard the news to investigate further. It’s a great example of how a simple ad campaign can be very effective.
