Playboy Launches on iPad as an Uncensored Web App

We’ve been chatting about this for a while and now, finally, the complete Playboy archives are available uncensored on the iPad, circumventing the strict rules Apple has in place regarding nudity and adult content inside the App Store.  Hugh and his team has achieved this by using a web app, so no content is stored on the iPad, only viewed.

Although originally slated for launch yesterday, the complete archives went online today and can be found by guiding your iPad browser to i.playboy.com.  However, you’re going to have to reach into your pocket to view the approximately 130,000 pages of Playboy content.

In our last post on the subject we talked over the planned price structure, as it seemed a little high for reprints of old material.  However, the launch has introduced not just one payment option but several.  Here’s what you’re going to have to pay:

  • Three Days Access – $4.95/£3.95
  • One Month Access – $24.95/£16.95
  • Three Months Access – $53.95/£36.95
  • Twelve Month Access – $119.95/£80.95

In his tweet Hugh Hefner said it would be $8 per month, which we thought was a lot, but it has turned out to be $10 per month if you select the twelve month option!  Ouch.

Leaving aside Playboy itself, we wonder how many publishers are going to be looking at how well this model performs, as it’s a great way for iPad owners to view content, while keeping all the cash for yourself.
