The New iPad: All the Features, Specs and Details
March 8, 2012 | Andy Boxall
As expected, Apple has revealed a new iPad model, and it’s even more impressive than the two which preceded it. However, proving once again that Apple rumors aren’t always correct, instead of calling it the iPad 3 or iPad HD, it’s simply known as the “new iPad.”
Here are the main, updated features of the new iPad:
- Retina Display.
This has been rumored to appear ever since the iPhone 4 made its debut, but it has been worth the wait. With an incredible 2048 x 1536 resolution, a 246ppi density and 44% greater color saturation than the previous model, it’s sure to look absolutely stunning.
- A5X Processor.
It may not be a quad-core processor, and is actually the same dual-core A5 found int the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, but it does have a quad-core GPU to help cope with the new Retina Display. 1GB of RAM has also been added to the spec.
- 5-megapixel Camera.
Now going by the name of iSight, the new iPad’s rear camera uses the same 5-element lens found on the iPhone 4S, but with a reduced 5-megapixel count. Additionally, it has autofocus, image stabilization and face detection, plus the ability to record 1080p video.
- 4G Connectivity.
Boasting the “most wireless network frequencies” of any mobile device, the new iPad will support AT&T, Verizon, Rogers, Telus and Bell’s 4G LTE networks, while offering fast 3G and HSPA+ around the world. Each 4G iPad will allow 3G roaming too.
- Battery Life.
The iPad has increased slightly in thickness and weight, now measuring 9.4mm thick and tipping the scales at 635 grams, which has allowed a larger battery to ensure the same 10 hours Wi-Fi and 9 hour 3G usage time remains the same.
- Voice Dictation.
It’s not quite Siri, but a new button on the iPad’s keyboard will allow you to dictate what you want to type.
- Pricing.
Despite all the new features, the new iPad has the same pricing structure of the old model, so $499 will bag your a 16GB Wi-Fi, $599 a 32GB and $699 a 64GB tablet. If you want 4G connectivity, you’ll need to pay $629, $729 and $829 respectively.
